Fire Station 19 marks Nashville's first LEED® Platinum Fire Station

Mayor Megan Barry, Department of General Services Director Nancy Whittemore, Nashville Fire Chief Rick White, City Council representatives and Socket, Unplug Nashville, joined together in April 2016 to celebrate the LEED® (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Platinum certification of Metro Nashville Fire Station 19 by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Fire Station 19’s Platinum level certification is the highest such designation awarded to any fire station in the Southeast and the highest level in the category of New Construction for Nashville Metro Government. Fire Station 19 earned LEED® Innovation Points for Exemplary Performance  for On-Site Renewable Energy and use of Regional Materials.

“My goal is for Nashville to be the greenest city in the Southeast, and projects like the LEED® Platinum certified Fire Hall 19 – which is the first Platinum fire hall in the Southeast - are integral to making that goal a reality,” said Mayor Megan Barry. “Energy efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings help to reduce any negative impacts on the air we breathe and the water we drink, while also saving taxpayers money in the long run through reduced energy utility costs.

Key sustainability attributes of the Fire Station 19 LEED® Platinum certification include:

  • Indoor potable water use reduction = 33%

  • Energy cost savings = 43.92% (as compared to a baseline building)

  • On-site renewable energy generated by solar panels = 15.51% (of total building energy cost)

  • Construction waste diverted from landfill = 63%

  • Recycled content in building materials = 16% (by cost)

  • Regional Materials = 31.85% (by cost, regionally manufactured and raw materials extracted)

  • Use of low-emitting materials for all adhesives, paints, carpet systems and composite wood materials


“We are proud to add the first LEED® Platinum certified project to the Department of General Services’ roster of LEED® buildings under our management,” said Department of General Services Director, Nancy Whittemore. “It is a testament to the dedication our city has to making Nashville a sustainability city of the future.”


The LEED® Platinum certification was awarded by the USGBC and verified by the Green Business Certification, Inc. The USGBC LEED® green building initiative is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of high-performance green buildings.
